Which Disc Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

Do you suffer from back or neck pain caused by a disc condition? A visit to the chiropractor can relieve pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms. Chiropractors use a variety of therapies designed to improve your comfort and ease of movement.

What Do Spinal Discs Do?

Rubbery discs cushion the space between individual vertebrae in the spine. The discs behave like shock absorbers and give your spine the flexibility it needs to move, twist, and bend. Discs consist of a soft, gel-like interior encased in a tougher outer covering.

Discs may become damaged due to injuries, stress, or wear and tear. Unfortunately, wear and tear is hard to avoid and is a natural part of aging. As you get older, the flexibility and water content of your spinal discs decreases, resulting in a thinner disc more prone to damage.

No matter what the cause of your disc condition, chiropractic treatments reduce pain, improve mobility, and may even help you avoid surgery.

Spinal Conditions Chiropractors Treat

Your chiropractor offers effective treatments for these disc conditions:

  • Herniated Discs. A herniated disc happens when the outer layer of a spinal disc ruptures and the interior material pushes through that tear. The protruding section of the disc presses on nerves, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness. Disc herniations often affect the neck and lower back. Men between 20 and 50 are particularly at risk for herniated discs, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Other risk factors include repetitive activities, being overweight, poor lifting technique, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and driving for long periods.
  • Bulging Discs. Bulging discs happen when the disc's inner core pushes against the outer layer without breaking through it. The bulging section of the disc increases pressure on nerve roots, causing stiffness and pain.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease. Age-related wear and tear is the cause of degenerative disc disease. Thinning discs lose their ability to adequately cushion the spine and could be the reason your back or neck is stiff and painful. Degenerative disc disease can affect flexibility and range of motion. Pain may be worse in certain positions, such as sitting or bending. Disc degeneration may begin as early as 40, although you might not feel any pain at this stage, according to the Arthritis Foundation.
  • Disc-Related Sciatica. Sciatica happens due to inflammation and irritation of the sciatic nerve that travels from the lower back to the foot. Bulging or herniated discs press on the nerve, causing pain. Although the problem disc may be in your lower back, pain radiates along the nerve path to your buttock, leg, or foot.

Treating Disc Conditions with Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors use several treatments to relieve symptoms of disc conditions, including:

  • Spinal Adjustment. Spinal adjustments restore misaligned vertebrae to their natural position. Adjustments improve mobility, ease pressure on nerves, and help decrease nerve irritation. Quick movements, produced by pressure from the hands or a small activator, realign the vertebrae.
  • Soft Tissue Therapy. Soft tissue therapies, like massage and soft tissue mobilization, reduce stiffness, ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote healing.
  • Flexion-Distraction. Flexion-distraction therapy uses gravity to improve spinal alignment and reduce pain. Your chiropractor gently adjusts your spine while you lie on a moving segmented table. The therapy repositions the bulging or herniated disc portion of the disc, reduces pressure on nerves, and improves circulation and mobility.
  • Spinal Decompression Therapy. Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine, which creates negative pressure inside the disc. The pressure difference helps herniated and bulging discs return to their normal positions, boosts circulation, and improves the flow of healing nutrients to the spine.
  • Exercises. Your chiropractor may recommend exercises to strengthen and loosen the muscles supporting the spine. These exercises improve joint stability, flexibility, and mobility, while reducing muscle tension.
  • Lifestyle Recommendations. If your habits or lifestyle are factors in your disc condition, your chiropractor may recommend making a few lifestyle changes. For example, improving your posture and taking frequent breaks during road trips could decrease pain and stiffness.

Reviews By Our Satisfied Patients

  • "Dr. Doug is definitely the best chiropractor I ever went to in my life. I usually tense up when it comes time to cracking my neck, but I was so at ease with Dr. Doug, he cracked it effortlessly.

He really takes his time with you and is a very caring, personable doctor. He got me out of my pain and I slept like a baby.

I'd also have to add how nice and clean the office is. The magazines are organized better than a library. They play great music in the reception area. And the office manager, Emily, is a sweetheart. She's very friendly; and fast and efficient when it comes to checking your insurance.

I'm so happy I found this place!"

  • "The entire staff is friendly, efficient, helpful, accommodating. Dr. Torrisi is possibly the most patient doctor on the planet. At the risk of sounding too dramatic, his treatment has been life changing. Perhaps the LEAST remarkable thing he has done is cure 20 years of chronic migraines, but there has been a steady decrease in pain and an increase in mobility under his care. Truly amazingly positive results."
